Abstract
Introduction: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the joints due to an erroneous attack by the immune system. RA development is influenced by genetic, hormonal, immunological and environmental factors, whose understanding is crucial to improve treatments. Materials and Methods: Reports published in PubMed, Scielo and Google Scholar between 2010-2023 were reviewed, using keywords such as “rheumatoid arthritis” and “early diagnosis”, and others, considering publications in English and Spanish. Results: RA is diagnosed through autoantibodies, inflammatory markers and radiographic, ultrasound and magnetic resonance images. Symptoms are controlled by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and glucocorticoids, while therapy has been transformed by disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs. RA management can be optimized using artificial intelligence, through analysis of omic and clinical data. Discussion: The clinical management of RA has been improved by new therapies and biomarkers. The goal is to develop curative and preventative treatments that transform RA into a manageable disease.
