Abstract

Introduction: Body weight gain, high blood pressure, diabetes and hypercholesterolemia are cardiometabolic risk factors associated with a large number of pathologies. Objective: To describe the presence of overweight/obesity, arterial hypertension, hyperglycemia and hypercholesterolemia in a group of pregnant women, children and adolescents from a Patagonian city of Argentina prior to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Materials and methods: Three groups from the city of Comodoro Rivadavia were studied. G1: 293 pregnant women (week 16 of gestation); G2: 317 children (6 to 11 years old) and G3: 496 adolescents (12 to 16 years old). We evaluated: weight, height, body mass index (BMI), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), total cholesterol (TC), HDL cholesterol (HDL), LDL cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides (TG). Results: The risk factors found were: in G1: 30.4 % overweight/obesity, 21.4 % arterial hypertension and 18.6 % hypercholesterolemia; in G2: 51.7 % overweight/obesity and 39 % hypercholesterolemia and in G3: 38 % overweight/obesity, 12.7 % arterial hypertension and 32.5 % hypercholesterolemia. Conclusion: This study shows the high prevalence of overweight and obesity in the three groups, a situation that favors the appearance of other factors that put health at risk. Implementing control policies on the industry and promotion, to protect the population from exposure to obesogenic environments, would help curb the epidemic growth of this problem.
