Abstract
Introduction: Antiphospholipid Syndrome is a condition characterized by thrombosis and recurrent abortions associated with high titers of antiphospholipid antibodies. These may arise transiently in patients with critical illness and infections, including COVID-19. Objectives: To determine the levels of antiphospholipid antibodies and their association with laboratory parameters in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 diagnosis. Materials and methods: Analytical, prospective, correlational, and cross-sectional study of male and female patients over 18 years of age, hospitalized with COVID-19 diagnosis at Nuevo Hospital San Roque (Córdoba, Argentina) between August 2021 and August 2022. Antiphospholipid antibody levels were determined with a commercial kit. Results: No statistically significant differences were observed between the control and case patients for anti-cardiolipin IgM, whereas significant differences were observed for anti-β2-glycoprotein-I IgM, and anti-cardiolipin and anti-β2-glycoprotein-I IgG. Regarding the analysis of “non-criteria” antiphospholipid antibodies, statistically significant differences were observed for anti-cardiolipin IgM and IgG, and anti-β2-glycoprotein-I IgM, but not for anti-β2-glycoprotein-I IgG. Whenanalyzing the behavior at different time intervals, statistically significant differences were observed for anti-cardiolipin and anti-β2-glycoprotein-I IgM. Conclusions: Patients with COVID-19 have higher levels of antiphospholipid antibodies than patients without the condition.
